The unintended expat blogger behind GentlePondPaper

Hello, I am Anna

I work as a project manager, a parent, and an expat living in Düsseldorf, Germany.

A few years back I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.

How It Started

Moving to Germany wasn’t part of the long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far more significant.

The first few months were demanding — unfamiliar systems, routines, and expectations. Daily tasks seemed more complex than they ought to be.

The Adjustment Period

There was culture shock, ambiguity, and a lot of learning on the job. Yet gradually routines took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began creating something that felt stable.

Why I Built GentlePondPaper

Most online information was either corporate relocation guidance or shallow tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.

This site aims to close that gap — practical advice grounded in real life in Germany.

What This Site Is (And Isn't)

This site provides:

  • Hands-on insights from living in Germany
  • Centered on family life and daily realities
  • Updated whenever something truly changes

This site is not:

  • An official tourism resource
  • Sponsored review site
  • Just another generic travel blog

What’s Next

Our time in Germany goes on, and so does the learning journey. As long as this information remains useful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.

If you have questions about family life in Düsseldorf or anywhere in Germany, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Best regards,

Anna
